Singaporean Students’ Unique 5-Month Internship Experience in Ho Chi Minh City

On March 16th 2024, five students from Singapore embarked on a journey that would shape their professional careers and create lasting memories in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Putra and Tyler took on roles as marketing interns, while Anne and Derick immersed themselves in HR internships at Saigon Business School. Sheng contributed his expertise as a Media and Communications intern at EQuest. 

The internship kicked off with an engaging orientation day where the students got to know their companies, and colleagues and received scope of work and training for their roles. They also participated in workshops about Vietnamese culture and Vietnamese language 101 to get a better understanding of the country they would settle in for half of the year. Throughout their internship, they not only expanded their knowledge and skills but also made significant contributions to the growth of Saigon Business School and EQuest.

Specifically, Putra leveraged the brand image of SBS by working hand-in-hand with the Marketing Department to produce content for social media. Anne and Derick supported the HR process by recruiting outstanding lecturers and hosting student workshops. Sheng Yong supported EQuest in their “Quest for Excellence” as a Public Relations intern, working closely with Saigon Business School to ensure that the quality of content is produced well. Tyler supported SBS’ event through logistics checking and has maintained the campus layout.

Besides, they participated enthusiastically in school events, showcasing their talents and integrating into the vibrant campus community. Networking events provided invaluable opportunities for them to connect with industry professionals, expand their professional network, and gain insights that will undoubtedly benefit their future careers.

Beyond their professional roles, these students quickly formed a tight-knit bond, sharing an apartment and regularly hanging out with both local and international friends, creating life-long friendships. 

Their exploration of Vietnam wasn’t limited to their workplace. They embarked on memorable excursions, including city tours where they soaked in the sights and sounds of Ho Chi Minh City’s rich culture such as Independence Palace, Ben Thanh Market, and Chinatown. They also had an escape to Da Lat, Nha Trang, Mui Ne, and Ha Noi where they got an opportunity to explore different parts of Vietnam. 

One of the standout experiences for the interns was their involvement as bridesmaids and groomsmen at a traditional Vietnamese wedding, where they embraced local customs and celebrated the union of two families.

As their internship is about to come to an end, these five months have not only enriched their professional journey but also created memories and friendships that will last a lifetime. Their experiences in HCMC have been nothing short of transformative, preparing them for future challenges and successes in their chosen fields.
