SBS - Deakin's early study abroad program includes 8 subjects, included in the first year training program of the Bachelor of Data Science degree awarded by Deakin University. Each course takes place over 3 months. Students participate in online learning on EQuest Group's MegaUni platform combined with face-to-face learning sessions with lecturers and mentors. After each subject, students receive a certificate of completion from the SBS - Deakin Alliance program. These certificates are valuable in recognizing the credits students have learned to transfer when transferring to Deakin University and other partner schools.
Subject 1: Introduction to Programming
The first course will expose students to programming thinking and exposure to a popular programming language today – Python. In this course, students will not only learn how to think programmatically but also have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with this powerful programming language. This is an important first step to building a programming foundation and preparing for future advancement.
Subject 2: Object-oriented programming
In this course, students will begin to explore the world of object-oriented programming through the Java language. Familiarity with this concept helps build a foundation of programming skills, facilitating growth in the field of Information Technology.
Subject 3: Introduction to statistic and Data analytics
In this subject, students will learn about basic concepts of statistics, from describing data to the concept of probability. Students will learn how to use statistical methods to analyze and understand data. Besides, the course also focuses on how to visualize data using charts and graphs.
Subject 4: Database fundamentals
In this course, students will learn about popular database management systems such as MySQL or PostgreSQL. Students will learn how to design databases in a standard way, including defining primary keys, relations, and constraints. This course also helps students understand query optimization and data security.
Subject 5: Data Wrangling
In this subject, students will learn how to work with raw and unstructured data. Students will learn about data cleaning techniques, which include filling in missing values, removing unnecessary data, and unifying formatting. Students will also learn how to transform data to suit analytical purposes.
Subject 6: Computer network and communication
In this subject, students will delve into how computer networks work. Students will understand basics such as the OSI model, TCP/IP protocol, and how to set up and maintain a network. The course also focuses on network security and how to prevent potential threats.
Subject 7: Introduction to Data Science & AI
Data science and artificial intelligence help students enter the exciting field of data science and artificial intelligence. Students will learn how to apply these methods to generate information and insights from data.
Subject 8: Data-driven business
In this subject, students learn how to use data to make decisions in key business activities such as sales, marketing, human resources, and finance.
